In the winter of 1995, the lives of the five Markley children were irrevocably altered when they returned from school to their home in Bristolville, Ohio, to find it empty. Their parents, Shelly Renee Markley, a 32-year-old homemaker, and her husband John, were gone without a trace. The scene inside their Greenville Road house was unsettling; a coffee pot was left brewing, nearly boiled dry, and John's wristwatch, which he seldom removed, sat on a shelf. Shelly’s cigarettes and lighter were also left behind, items she reportedly always carried with her. Upstairs, the family's gun cabinet, usually kept locked, was found open, as was a small safe in the master bedroom with important papers scattered about. The couple's red and silver Chevrolet pickup truck was also missing, and no note was left to explain their absence. The family was also preparing to attend the funeral of John's twin sister, who had passed away just two days prior, and the clothes they had intended to wear were laid out on their unmade bed. The last known sighting of the couple was on the morning of their disappearance at a local bank's drive-thru, about five miles from their home. A bank teller, who knew the couple, reported seeing John driving their pickup truck with Shelly in the middle seat. Beside Shelly was an unidentified man. Shelly cashed a $1,000 check, signing it on the dashboard before John completed the transaction. This was the final confirmed activity of the couple. A few days later, their pickup truck was discovered abandoned and locked in a store parking lot roughly ten miles from their residence. The keys were gone, but the couple’s cell phone was found inside the cab. In the truck bed were tarps that normally covered John’s prized 1978 Corvette, which had been left uncovered in their garage. The truck was also noted to be unusually muddy. In the years that followed, the search for Shelly and John Markley yielded no answers. Foul play is suspected in their disappearance, and the case remains unsolved. A man named Steven Durst, one of John's former employees, was convicted of extortion after he contacted the family claiming to be holding the couple for ransom. However, authorities later concluded that he likely had no genuine information about their whereabouts. Described as a devoted mother, Shelly and her husband had been married for sixteen years and had a fully paid-for home. The investigation into what happened to Shelly Renee Markley and her husband is ongoing, handled by the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office, leaving their children and community with unanswered questions. The case is a complex mystery, marked by a strange scene at the family home, a final sighting with an unknown individual, and a lingering sense of loss for a family torn apart.
