In January of 1998, a 72-year-old man named Ed Thomas was admitted to the Pine Bluff Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. At the time of his admission, Mr. Thomas had been diagnosed with dementia, a condition that could cause him to become easily confused, and he had been declared incapacitated. He was described as a Black male with black hair and brown eyes, standing at approximately 5'11' and weighing around 184 pounds. His case would soon become a long-standing mystery for the Pine Bluff community, leaving his family searching for answers for years to come.
On January 24, 1998, just days after his admission to the nursing facility, Ed Thomas wandered away. He was last seen wearing a green coat and a brown derby hat. Following his disappearance, he was never heard from again. The circumstances surrounding how he was able to leave the nursing home remain a point of concern. The immediate search efforts and the investigation that followed his disappearance yielded very few details, and his whereabouts remained unknown, causing immense distress to his loved ones.
The years that followed were filled with legal proceedings and continued uncertainty for Mr. Thomas's family. His daughter, Edna Thomas Brown, who was also his guardian, filed a negligence lawsuit against the nursing home. Tragically, after more than five years with no contact or information, Ed Thomas was legally declared deceased by the Jefferson County Probate Court in May of 2003. Despite this legal declaration, his case is classified as an endangered missing person case, as he was never located. The Pine Bluff Police Department has maintained the investigation, but a resolution has remained elusive.
