Yakelin Llanes, a 29-year-old woman, was reported missing on August 28, 1999, in Miami, Florida. On the day she disappeared, Yakelin was last seen with her two sons, Jonathan and Mario Mordoche, as they prepared to travel to Tampa, Florida, to visit the boys' father. They were driving a rented brown 1999 Chevrolet Malibu with a Florida license plate number GH830M. Despite plans to return with a new vehicle from the visit, the family never arrived at their destination.
