The story of Austin Eugene Bryant and his older brother, Edward, is a deeply unsettling case that began to unfold long before authorities were ever aware the boys were missing. In the late 1990s, the two brothers were placed in the foster care of Edward and Linda Bryant in Monument, Colorado. The couple officially adopted Austin, who was four at the time, and Edward, who was seven, in March of 2000. Both boys were considered to have special needs, and their adoptive parents received monthly financial assistance from the El Paso County Department of Human Services for their care. However, the boys seemingly vanished years before their absence was ever officially noted. Concerns about Austin's welfare first came to light in January 2011, when other former foster children of the Bryants reported him missing, stating he hadn't been seen since sometime between 2003 and 2005. This initial report triggered a wider investigation which soon revealed that his older brother, Edward, was also unaccountable and had not been seen since as early as 2001.
The investigation into the boys' whereabouts revealed a disturbing timeline and conflicting stories from their adoptive parents. Edward and Linda Bryant never reported either of their adopted sons as missing. When questioned by authorities, they provided differing accounts of what happened, with Linda initially claiming they ran away together in May 2003, while Edward Sr. stated that Edward Jr. ran away in 2001 and Austin left in 2005. Further investigation showed that Austin was withdrawn from his school in August 2003, with the intention of being homeschooled, but no subsequent educational or medical records could be found for either boy after that year. It was discovered that the Bryants had continued to collect over $1,700 a month in state benefits for the children long after they were last seen. The couple, who had nine adopted children in total, had relocated to Texas around 2005.
The case against Edward and Linda Bryant focused on financial fraud, as there was no direct evidence to charge them in relation to the boys' disappearance. They were arrested in Texas and extradited back to Colorado. In January 2012, Linda Bryant pleaded guilty to 54 felonies, including theft and attempting to influence a public servant, and was sentenced to 42 years in prison. A few months later, Edward Bryant Sr. pleaded guilty to five similar felony charges and was sentenced to 30 years in prison; he has since been released on parole. Allegations of severe abuse also surfaced from other children who had been in the Bryant home. One of the boys' adoptive brothers told investigators that Austin was subjected to punishments such as being denied food and locked in a garage for extended periods. Despite extensive searches of the former Bryant property in Colorado, no trace of Austin or his brother has ever been found, and authorities fear they may be deceased. The disappearance of Austin and Edward Bryant remains an unsolved mystery, a tragic overview of a case where two young brothers fell through the cracks of the system meant to protect them, their voices silenced and their whereabouts unknown.
