In the late spring of 2001, the community of L'Anse, Michigan, was faced with a lasting mystery. On June 14, 53-year-old John Lipuma and his wife, Jane, were last seen in Powell Township. It is believed the couple embarked on a canoe trip in their 15-foot, 7-inch green plastic Waterquest canoe on Lake Superior. The conditions on the lake that day were described as rough, with a water temperature of approximately 51 degrees, setting a precarious scene for their outing. John was a white male with brown, partially bald hair and blue eyes, standing at 5'10" and weighing around 165 pounds. The initial signs of trouble surfaced when belongings of the couple began to appear along the shoreline. Their canoe, life jackets, and other personal effects were discovered scattered, painting a grim picture of what might have transpired on the rough waters of Lake Superior. Adding to the growing concern, Michigan State Police troopers located the Lipumas' car abandoned at a campground in Marquette County. The search for the couple intensified, culminating in a tragic discovery the following month. On July 14, 2001, exactly one month after they were last seen, Jane's body was found near Trout Point in the Munising area. This heartbreaking development confirmed the worst fears for one half of the missing couple, but it left the fate of John Lipuma shrouded in uncertainty. Despite the recovery of his wife's body and their personal belongings, including the canoe, John has never been located. The investigation into his disappearance has remained open, a painful and unresolved chapter for his family and the community. The official classification of his case is considered that of a lost or injured missing person. The disappearance of John Lipuma is a somber tale of a recreational outing that ended in tragedy and enduring questions. What began as a canoe trip on a vast and unpredictable lake concluded with one confirmed loss and one lingering mystery. The recovery of the couple's canoe and vehicle, followed by the discovery of Jane's body, provided a partial but devastating narrative of the events of that June day. However, without John, the story remains incomplete. Decades later, the case continues to be a poignant reminder of the power of nature and the painful void left behind when a loved one vanishes without a trace.
