In the winter of 2009, 47-year-old Michael William Doane was facing a difficult period in his life. He had been unemployed for a significant amount of time and the inability to find work left him feeling depressed and unhappy. On the morning of January 28th, he and his live-in girlfriend had an argument. Following the disagreement, Michael left their Las Vegas, Nevada, residence in his vehicle and was never heard from again.
There was an indication that he attempted to call his girlfriend after he left, but the call did not connect. His family believes he may have driven out near Indian Springs to clear his head.
The day after his disappearance, a park ranger discovered Michael's vehicle abandoned in a remote area of the Desert National Wildlife Range. This location was described as being about 40 miles east of Interstate 95 and Lee Canyon Road. Investigators at the scene observed a single set of footprints leading away from the car and heading out into the vast wilderness. This discovery prompted search efforts by law enforcement and concerned family members. About a month and a half after he went missing, a search was organized that included approximately 20 people on horseback and 15 of his family members searching on foot, all hoping to find any sign of Michael or his belongings.
At the time he went missing, Michael was described as a white male, standing 5'10' to 5'11' tall and weighing between 170 and 205 pounds. He had brown hair with some gray around the temples and blue eyes. He had several distinctive tattoos, including a picture of the Beatles on his right shoulder, a Tasmanian Devil on his left shoulder, an eagle on his back, and a longhorn skull on his chest. He was last seen wearing a yellow jacket, blue jeans, and black shoes. The circumstances surrounding Michael's disappearance remain unclear, and despite the passage of time, his case is still considered an unsolved endangered missing person case.
