Dennis Cyncor-McMillan, a 17-year-old from Los Gatos, California, went missing on March 9, 2009, during a late-night swim at Davenport Beach in Santa Cruz County. He and a friend, along with a group of companions, had gone to the beach for a barbecue and overnight camping trip. Around 4 a.m., Dennis and another friend decided to swim from the shore to a rocky outcropping approximately 70 feet from the beach. While Dennis’s friend managed to return to shore, Dennis did not make it back. Despite being a strong swimmer and a participant in the Capitola Junior Lifeguards, the cold water and challenging conditions likely overwhelmed him. The ocean temperature was near 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and swells reached up to 12 feet that night.
Immediately following his disappearance, a large-scale search and rescue effort was launched by the California State Parks, U.S. Coast Guard, and other local agencies. Crews scoured the area, covering 50 square miles of ocean, but no trace of Dennis was found. Despite exhaustive efforts, the search was called off later that day. Due to the dangerous and unpredictable nature of the currents, Dennis is presumed to have drowned, though his body has never been recovered.
Dennis was a senior at Los Gatos High School and well-regarded by his peers. He was active in sports, playing as a wide receiver for the school’s football team. His passing marked a difficult period for the school, as he was the second football team member to die unexpectedly that year. In his memory, a scholarship was established at his high school to honor his life and legacy.
