Ilma Saucedo, aged 47, was last seen on February 11, 2011, in Riverside, California. That morning, she left her home for her job at a dry-cleaning business but never returned. Saucedo, who lived on Hale Street, had been renting rooms to two male tenants at the time of her disappearance. After she went missing, her room was found in disarray, with her personal items, including her purse, clothes, and makeup bag, left behind.
Her 20-year-old nephew, Adolfo Jose Morales Barahona, had been staying with her rent-free in the weeks leading up to her disappearance. He told the other tenants that Saucedo had gone to Guatemala, but she had left behind her passport, driver's license, and credit cards, making this explanation unlikely. The tenants grew suspicious, and on March 4, 2011, they reported her missing to the police.
In the days following her disappearance, Morales Barahona was seen driving Saucedo's car to Bakersfield, where he met a girl he'd been communicating with online. Despite being unemployed, he had a large amount of cash with him, which he used to purchase gifts and upgrade the car's audio system. Later that year, he was charged and convicted of her murder, based on circumstantial evidence. Authorities believe Morales Barahona killed Saucedo during a robbery at her home. Despite his conviction, Saucedo's body has never been found.
