Promila Mehta-Paul, a 70-year-old ophthalmologist, was last seen on March 21, 2011, in Munster, Indiana. After leaving work around 5:00 p.m., she made a routine bank deposit at First Financial Bank. Surveillance footage confirmed she completed the deposit and was driving her gold 2001 Toyota RAV4. The following day, when she failed to show up for her hospital rounds, she was reported missing. Neither Promila nor her vehicle has been seen since.
At the time of her disappearance,
Promila’s son, Paresh Paul, had been living with her. He left the area shortly after she vanished and was later detained at the U.S.-Mexico border. Despite being questioned, he provided no information regarding his mother's whereabouts. Investigators suspected foul play, as Promila had not made any unusual financial transactions, nor was there any indication she had planned to leave.
Paresh was eventually named a person of interest and, in 2019, was charged with Promila’s murder. However, the charge was later reduced to obstruction of justice and failure to report a dead body after Paresh admitted to finding his mother deceased on the day she went missing. He disposed of her remains to hinder the investigation, but Promila's body has never been found. Paresh served time for his actions but was released after serving time for the obstruction charge.
