Thomas Duesterhaus, a 37-year-old teacher and lay Catholic minister, was last seen on June 17, 2011, in McLean, Virginia. After being informed that his teaching contract at Bishop Denis J. O'Connell High School in Arlington would not be renewed, Duesterhaus left his communal residence, appearing distraught. He was later spotted in Virginia Beach, where a witness saw him swimming in the ocean on June 18. His travel bag was found abandoned on the beach shortly after.
