In the spring of 1979, Catherine Runte, a 28-year-old interior designer, was reportedly in good spirits. She enjoyed her part-time job in Barrington, Illinois, gave tennis lessons, and was looking forward to her mother's upcoming wedding. However, a disturbing event had occurred just eight months prior when two armed intruders broke into her Palatine home, handcuffed her in the basement, and stole thousands of dollars worth of jewelry.
