Dottie had been in a troubled marriage with Jule Caylor, an entomologist, and had recently taken steps toward independence. She opened a separate bank account, rented a post office box, and even confided in friends about her plans to divorce Jule. On the day of her disappearance, Jule told authorities that he had dropped her off at the Pleasant Hill BART station for a trip to visit a friend, though no one could confirm seeing her board a train.
