Rene Yanez, a 21-year-old man, went missing on February 10, 1993, in San Gabriel, California. That evening, at around 9:30 p.m., Rene set out from Darlington Stables on his horse, La Mora, accompanied by his white pit bull terrier, Queen. The plan was to take a nighttime ride along the San Gabriel River, a route he had taken before, as he was an experienced horseman who regularly competed in rodeos.
The next day, both the horse and dog returned to the stables without Rene. The horse’s saddle was askew, and its blanket was wet, which raised concerns. A search effort was launched, and dogs were able to track Rene’s scent to a spot between the Whittier Narrows Dam and San Gabriel Boulevard. However, despite extensive efforts involving divers, search-and-rescue teams, and family members, no sign of Rene was ever found. Authorities suspect that Rene may have attempted to ford the river and drowned, though his body was never recovered.
Rene was a skilled rider and regularly participated in dangerous events like "El Paso de la Muerte" and bull riding. He had moved to the U.S. from Mexico when he was four and was living in Rosemead, California, with his wife and young son at the time of his disappearance. His case remains unsolved, and investigators fear that he may have been swept away by the river currents.
