In the autumn of 2002, Shannaz Sathi Zakia, a 29-year-old woman originally from Bangladesh, was embarking on a new chapter in her life in Washington. Having moved to the United States six years prior, she was looking forward to gaining her citizenship and helping other family members join her. Known to her friends and family by her middle name, Sathi, she was last seen in the Tukwila area on October 30, 2002. In the weeks leading up to her disappearance, Sathi had taken significant steps to change her personal circumstances. She had been married for eleven years, but on October 11, she reported to the police that her husband had sexually assaulted her, stating it was part of long-standing abuse. Following this report, she moved out of the home she shared with her husband and established her own residence in Tukwila, successfully obtaining a temporary order of protection against him on October 17. The last known communications from Sathi occurred on October 29th and 30th. On the 29th, a friend spoke with Sathi, who mentioned she was planning to meet her husband the next morning to retrieve her wedding jewelry. That same day, despite her husband later telling police he hadn't seen her since she moved out on October 12, a bank teller confirmed that both Sathi and her husband were at the bank together. They withdrew $1,500 from a joint account to wire to her family in Bangladesh. On the morning of October 30, 2002, Sathi spoke with a friend for the last time; she was also last heard from by her family in Bangladesh on this day. She had an appointment scheduled but failed to appear. Alarmingly, she disappeared just two days before a court hearing that was scheduled for October 31, where she was seeking to make the protective order against her husband permanent. She did not attend this hearing. Concerns for Sathi's welfare grew, and she was officially reported missing on November 7, 2002. On that same day, her silver 2001 Lexus was discovered locked and abandoned in front of a business in an industrial and commercial area of Tukwila. There was no sign of Sathi at the scene. An investigation into her disappearance revealed that she had left behind all of her personal belongings at her home, including her clothing, toothbrush, hairbrush, and important legal documents, suggesting she did not leave voluntarily. While investigators have not officially stated that a crime occurred, they do not believe she left on her own accord. The Tukwila Police Department has investigated her case, but without further leads, it has remained unsolved. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance, particularly the timing in relation to her court date and the domestic abuse allegations, remain a central focus of the case.
