Felipe Santos, a 23-year-old Mexican national, disappeared on October 14, 2003, in Naples, Florida. On the day of his disappearance, Santos was involved in a minor car accident while driving to work. Collier County Deputy Steve Calkins responded to the scene, citing Santos for driving without a license and insurance, and subsequently placing him in his patrol car. According to Calkins, instead of booking Santos into jail, he decided to drop him off at a nearby Circle K convenience store.
However, Santos was never seen again, and no evidence has confirmed his arrival at the Circle K.
Suspicion grew after it was discovered that Santos had never been booked into the local jail, prompting his family to file a missing persons report two weeks later. An internal investigation initially cleared Calkins of wrongdoing, but the situation became more alarming when, three months later, another man, Terrance Williams, also disappeared after an encounter with Calkins. This led to Calkins' dismissal from the Collier County Sheriff’s Office for providing conflicting statements about the cases.
Despite the investigations and media attention, including involvement from public figures like Tyler Perry, no concrete leads have emerged. Both Santos' and Williams' disappearances remain unsolved, and Calkins maintains his innocence, although he failed parts of a polygraph test related to the cases.
