On a summer evening in June of 2009, 72-year-old Julia Madsen vanished from her family's beach house in the South Seaside Park section of Berkeley Township, New Jersey. She and her husband, Ed, were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary at their summer home, a place of cherished family memories. Around 7:00 p.m., Julia told her husband she was going for a brief walk on the beach, just a short distance from their home. She left without her keys, money, or identification. She was wearing a pink shirt, white capri pants, and white sneakers. Julia never returned from her walk, and her husband reported her missing later that evening.
An extensive search was launched immediately, involving local and state police, volunteers, tracking dogs, helicopters, and boats, but no trace of Julia was ever found. The search covered the beach, the nearby Island Beach State Park, and the surrounding waters.
