Known also by the nickname 'Craig Long,' William was in a vulnerable position as he had a medical disorder that required medication, and his lack of familiarity with the Roswell area would have made navigating his surroundings difficult. His friend and family were left with immense worry and a lack of answers when he seemingly vanished without a trace.
The initial investigation into William's disappearance was handled by the Roswell Police Department. The circumstances were troubling; a man in a new city, with a medical condition, had disappeared late at night. The official report noted his last known location and the clothing he was wearing, simple details that became crucial in the search for him. The report also highlighted his physical characteristics, including the scars that told a story of a life lived, and the single ear piercing. For his family, the lack of information was agonizing. Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, with no sign of William and no leads to follow. The hope of finding him safe dwindled with each passing day, leaving a void of uncertainty.
Tragically, the case remained cold for over a year. Then, on December 30, 2011, partial human remains were discovered in a wooded area near the Bluegrass Valley Parkway in the nearby city of Alpharetta, Georgia. For more than a decade, the identity of this individual remained unknown. The breakthrough in the case came in March 2022, when a member of the Doe Network, a volunteer organization that assists in resolving cold cases, submitted William Lee Carter as a possible match for the unidentified remains. The Roswell Police Department was able to confirm the match, finally bringing a resolution to the long and painful search for William. While the discovery of his remains brought an end to the uncertainty, it also confirmed the worst fears of his loved ones.
