Thomas Edward Funk, Jr., known to his loved ones as Tom, Tommy, TJ, or Tommy Jr., vanished from his Gainesville, Georgia, home leaving behind a life and a family that continues to search for answers. On the evening of October 1, 2011, Thomas was last seen by his roommate at their residence on Oconee Circle. When his roommate awoke the following morning, Thomas was gone, but his pickup truck, wallet, and cellphone were left behind. His disappearance was considered uncharacteristic, as he was known to stay in touch with his family. A few days prior to his disappearance, Thomas had received treatment at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center for a foot injury he sustained in an accident with a circular saw.
At the time of his disappearance, Thomas was a 47-year-old white male with sandy brown hair and green eyes, one of which has a distinctive brown spot. He stood between 5'11' and 6'0' tall and weighed approximately 155 to 160 pounds. He has several identifying features, including scars on both of his arms, his torso, and the back of his right leg. Additionally, he has graphic design tattoos on both of his biceps and forearms. It is believed he may have been wearing Levi's jeans and blue Nike tennis shoes at the time he went missing. Thomas had a history of drug and alcohol abuse but had reportedly been sober for about three years leading up to his disappearance. There was some discrepancy about his activities on the night he was last seen; his roommate stated he attended an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and returned home, while others at the meeting did not recall seeing him there.
The Hall County Sheriff's Office has continued to investigate Thomas's disappearance over the years. Search efforts have included the use of K-9 units at his home, though these searches did not yield any significant leads. According to his family, investigators also drained a well where a comforter belonging to Thomas was discovered, but no other evidence was found. Despite the passage of time and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement, no new leads have emerged in the case.
