Candice Shields, a 20-year-old pregnant woman, was last seen on the evening of December 10, 2011, at her grandparents' home in Graham, Texas. Candice had been staying with her family at their residence on Pearl Street, and shortly after 9:30 p.m., her phone activity indicated that she accessed Facebook. At around 2:30 a.m. the next morning, a call was made from her phone. However, Candice was never heard from again.
All her personal belongings, including her phone, wallet, and clothing, were left behind at the house. Her family became alarmed after discovering she hadn’t shown up for work or returned home, and they reported her missing on December 15, 2011.
The investigation took a tragic turn in 2013 when Jeremy Paul Thornburg, the father of Candice’s unborn child, and another woman named Lajuana Long were arrested for Candice's murder. Thornburg had been a person of interest from the start, and forensic evidence later tied him to the crime. Long, who had also been in a relationship with Thornburg, testified that Thornburg shot Candice and that they attempted to cover up the crime by pouring bleach on her body to destroy evidence. Thornburg was convicted of her murder in 2014 and sentenced to life in prison.
