In the summer of 2012, a 32-year-old man named Clarence Wayne Holmes vanished from the area of Laurel River Lake in London, Kentucky. On the day he was last seen, a storm was approaching, and Holmes had been kindly helping other boaters secure their vessels. After assisting the others, he departed from a houseboat, stating that he was heading back to the marina. However, he never arrived at his destination.
The only trace of him that was found was his boat, discovered abandoned on a small, sandy island. At the time of his disappearance, Holmes was described as a white male, standing between 5'9' and 6'0' tall, and weighing between 170 and 190 pounds. He had brown hair that was short on the sides and was mostly bald on top, and he had blue eyes and a goatee. He also had a distinctive tattoo of a bicep band on his left upper arm and a piercing in his left ear. He was last seen wearing white swimming trunks with blue flowers and a Fossil watch on his left hand.
The initial search for Clarence Holmes was extensive, involving local authorities and concerned citizens. As the years passed with no sign of him, the case grew colder, leaving his family and friends in a state of uncertainty. Despite the passage of time, efforts to locate him did not entirely cease. In the spring of 2016, nearly four years after he went missing, a dive team from Louisiana traveled to Laurel Lake to conduct a new search. This renewed effort was prompted by a new lead, as cadaver dogs had alerted authorities to a specific area in the Marsh Branch of the lake, not far from where Holmes's boat had been found. The divers faced challenging conditions, as the lake is essentially a flooded mountain range with significant depths, making the search particularly difficult.
Despite the renewed hope that this search brought, it did not lead to the recovery of Clarence Holmes. The dive team searched an area with an underwater tree, believing it might have been significant, but their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful. The following year, in the spring of 2017, a body was discovered in the same area of Laurel Lake where Holmes had disappeared. However, it was determined not to be him, but rather a 21-year-old man from New York City. To this day, the disappearance of Clarence Wayne Holmes remains an unsolved missing person case. The circumstances surrounding his vanishing act on that stormy day in 2012 are still a mystery.
