Valerie Jeanette Sifsof, a 43-year-old woman, was last seen on July 7, 2012, while on a camping trip with her boyfriend at the Granite Creek Campground, situated at Mile 64 of the Seward Highway, near Girdwood, Alaska. A member of the Yu'Pik Inupiaq tribe, Valerie was a beloved daughter and sister who was actively planning her younger sister's baby shower at the time of her disappearance. On the night she went missing, she and her boyfriend had an argument. Following the disagreement, around midnight, Valerie reportedly walked away from their campsite, leaving behind all of her personal belongings, including her keys, identification, and cell phone. She was last seen wearing a black DKNY hooded sweatshirt over a green tank top, blue sweatpants, and black calf-high boots. The initial search for Valerie was extensive, involving Alaska State Troopers who utilized ATVs, search dogs, and helicopters to comb the densely wooded terrain surrounding the campground. Despite these efforts, no trace of Valerie was found. Her boyfriend, who reported her missing on July 11, several days after she was last seen, stated that he had looked for her before leaving the campground the day after she walked away. The Sifsof family, however, relentlessly continued their own search, driven by the hope of finding answers. Their search of the area, including the thick forests and icy creeks, spanned miles. A significant development in the case came when items of Valerie's clothing were discovered in Six Mile Creek, which runs behind the campground. In August 2012, a kayaker found her green tank top in the creek. Later, in October, her family found her black DKNY hooded sweatshirt at a logjam about a half-mile downstream from where she was last seen. These discoveries led her family to believe that she may have fallen into the swift-moving creek. The challenging conditions, including heavy rains that caused the creek to rise to dangerously high levels, hampered further search efforts by troopers. Although her body has never been recovered, Valerie Sifsof was legally declared deceased in 2016. The circumstances of her disappearance remain unresolved, leaving her family with unanswered questions. The case stands as a poignant example of the many missing persons cases in Alaska, particularly those involving Indigenous women.
