James McDonald, a 46-year-old man from Gainesville, Florida, was last seen on October 8, 2012. On that day, he visited a friend’s home in Suwannee, Florida, a location he frequented, to launch his kayak on the Suwannee River. He had recently gone through a breakup and appeared emotionally distressed at the time. His friend was out of town, but neighbors reported seeing McDonald launch his yellow 17-foot Solstice kayak on October 9.
The Suwannee River flows into the Gulf of Mexico, and it’s suspected he may have been heading towards Ochlockonee Bay, possibly stopping along the way at places like Apalachicola or St. George Island.
McDonald was a skilled outdoorsman with experience in long kayaking trips. On October 14, a park ranger spotted a man matching his description beside a large yellow kayak on the Ochlockonee River. The man, believed to be McDonald, appeared to be well-prepared, with enough supplies for an extended journey, and did not ask for help when approached.
Despite searches conducted by the Coast Guard and Florida Fish and Wildlife agents between October 15 and 17, no trace of McDonald or his kayak was found. His truck, parked at his friend's house, remained undisturbed, and his phone and credit card have not been used since his disappearance. There were no signs of foul play, and his family remains concerned, as this behavior was highly uncharacteristic of him.
