In the spring of 1973, 26-year-old Terry Lee Rogers, a student at Central Oregon Community College, was looking forward to the Memorial Day weekend. An experienced outdoorsman and former ski patroller at Mount Bachelor, he was very familiar with the rugged terrain surrounding Bend, Oregon. He had made plans to camp alone at a private campsite situated about a mile below Meadow Camp on the Deschutes River, southeast of Bend. Rogers was last seen by a friend on May 27, 1973, at his campsite, which was nestled below a bluff where he had parked his 1949 Dodge pickup truck. Concern grew when two of Rogers' friends went to his campsite on the evening of Tuesday, May 29th, and found it strangely deserted. His pickup truck was still parked on the bluff above, with a bag of recently purchased groceries inside. Down at the campsite, his personal belongings, including his wallet, glasses, and all his camping gear, were left behind as if he had just stepped away for a moment. There was no sign of a struggle or any indication as to where he might have gone. His friends promptly notified the authorities, who launched an extensive search. The Deschutes County Search and Rescue unit, along with friends of Rogers, conducted a thorough three-day search of the area. They scoured the landscape on foot, on horseback, and from the air with a helicopter, but found no trace of the missing man. The disappearance of Terry Lee Rogers, a man so at home in the wilderness, from a campsite with all his possessions left behind, was perplexing to law enforcement and his loved ones. Despite the exhaustive search and subsequent investigations over the years, no solid leads have emerged to explain what happened to him that holiday weekend. The case grew cold, leaving a lingering sense of uncertainty and sorrow for his family and friends, who remember him as a well-liked individual who had even traveled as far as South America. Decades later, the mystery of his disappearance endures, a silent testament to a life interrupted.
