In the summer of 2015, a 23-year-old U.S. Army veteran named Michael "Mike" Forrest Robinson disappeared from Bend, Oregon. He was last seen on July 28, 2015, with his black Labrador, Charlie. A missing person report was filed with the Bend Police Department in Deschutes County after his wife, who he was estranged from, went to their apartment on August 4th to finalize moving out and discovered he had left. In the months leading up to his disappearance, Michael had been struggling with depression and anxiety. He had expressed frustration about not being able to get a timely appointment with a counselor through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Michael, who had served a nine-month deployment in Kuwait, left troubling notes in his apartment asking loved ones not to look for him and to let him "rest in peace." On August 5, 2015, Michael's truck was found abandoned and out of gas on Highway 20, about 100 miles east of Bend, near Riley in Harney County. Inside the truck, another note was found in which Michael wrote that he was happy and promised to contact his family in the future. The ambiguous nature of this note left his family uncertain whether he intended to harm himself or start a new life elsewhere. The Harney County Sheriff's Office and Harney County Search & Rescue conducted searches of the vast and rural area by foot, ATV, and aircraft, but found no trace of Michael or his dog, Charlie. The active search was suspended after a few days, followed by a month of phone calls and public notices that yielded no new leads. The case of Michael Robinson's disappearance remains open, and his family continues to hope for answers. Law enforcement officials have considered the possibility that he may have gotten a ride from someone on the highway. One of the lead investigators noted that in most missing person cases in that area, hunters often discover remains in the fall, but nothing has ever been found in Michael's case. He did not take any of his camping gear, fishing poles, or warm clothing with him. Michael is described as being 6 feet tall, weighing around 160 pounds, with blue-green eyes and blonde hair. When he was last seen, he was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans, and his dog Charlie was wearing a maroon collar with an American flag bandana. The circumstances surrounding Michael Robinson's disappearance are a blend of concerning indicators of his mental state and the possibility that he chose to walk away from his life, leaving his loved ones with unanswered questions.
