James "Tommy" Stanley, a 25-year-old man from Athens, Ohio, was last seen on September 18, 1974. On that day, Stanley abruptly packed all of his belongings, said a rushed goodbye to his family, including his two daughters, and told them he was leaving for Florida and would never return to Ohio. He did not explain why, but it left his family with a sense that he was in trouble. This fear prompted them not to report him missing until many years later, in 2007.

In the autumn of 1974, a young man named James Thomas Stanley, known to his loved ones as Tommy, made a sudden and perplexing departure from his life in Ohio. At the age of 25, he packed his car and said his goodbyes to his family, cryptically stating that he was in some kind of trouble and needed to leave for Florida, adding that he could never come back to Ohio. He left behind two young daughters and a family who were bewildered by his abrupt decision to vanish. The reasons for his flight remained a mystery to those who knew him, casting a long shadow of unanswered questions over his disappearance. His family, concerned that reporting him missing might bring him more harm, did not file a missing person's report at the time. Days after he was last seen, Stanley's green 1969 Fiat was discovered abandoned on the side of Interstate 95 near Kenly, North Carolina. A state trooper who came across the vehicle noted that it appeared to have been there for at least 48 hours. Inside the car were all of his personal belongings, including his wallet, clothing, and even photo albums. The keys were still in the ignition, yet there was no sign of foul play. The car was towed to a local garage where it was found to have a broken radiator hose. After the discovery of his car, the trail for James Stanley went cold. There have been no credible sightings of him and no activity on his Social Security number since 1974. Years turned into decades with no word from Tommy. His family, who had initially hesitated to involve law enforcement out of fear for his safety, eventually filed a missing person's report in 2007. In 1981, seven years after he was last seen, James Thomas Stanley was declared legally deceased. The case remains a poignant mystery, a story of a young father who felt compelled to leave everything behind for reasons that may never be fully known. The discovery of his abandoned car with all his possessions intact only deepens the enigma of his disappearance, leaving his family with a lifetime of wondering what trouble led him to drive away and never look back.
