Lola I. Carney, a 40-year-old wife and mother of three, vanished from her home on Whiskey Mill Road in Clarksboro, a part of East Greenwich Township, New Jersey. She was last seen late in the evening on September 12, 1982, the night before two of her children were supposed to start a new school year. Following her disappearance, her husband, George Carney, told her children that their mother had left in the middle of the night and would not be coming back.
