Catherine "Cathy" Ford, a 19-year-old from Gorman, Maryland, was last seen on February 17, 1988. She received a phone call at her family’s restaurant from a man claiming to be a magistrate in Mt. Storm, West Virginia, who asked her to meet him to discuss some checks. Later that day, another call came from someone posing as an undercover officer, mentioning a possible investigation into her family's restaurant. Cathy left the restaurant around 2:00 p.m.
in her father’s silver Ford Bronco to meet this man, but she was never seen again.
Three weeks later, on March 8, 1988, Cathy’s burned-out vehicle was discovered hidden near a river close to Bismark Road, but there was no trace of Cathy herself. The fire appeared to be deliberate, and police suspected foul play. Paul Ferrell, a local deputy sheriff with whom Cathy had a secret relationship, became a prime suspect after blood stains were found in his trailer, although DNA testing was inconclusive. Additionally, Ferrell admitted to writing an anonymous letter to Cathy’s parents after her disappearance, claiming she had run away.
Despite no physical evidence linking him to her body, Ferrell was convicted of Cathy’s murder in 1989, based largely on circumstantial evidence, including blood traces in his trailer.
