Her usual jogging route spanned about 2.7 miles around her neighborhood. When Gina did not come back home, her husband, Andray Ellison, flagged down a police car two hours later and reported her missing.

Naval Reserve and a student at San Jose State University, had reportedly been experiencing marital issues. She had previously confided in friends about her intention to leave her husband and had left him temporarily before, though she returned due to financial struggles. About two years before her disappearance, she had undergone a psychiatric evaluation after a suicide attempt during an argument with her husband.
Despite extensive searches, no evidence was found. Her husband, Andray, cooperated with the investigation and actively contacted authorities for updates. However, he later became involved in criminal activities, confessing to several bank robberies and being convicted in 1991. Although authorities have considered Andray a person of interest in Gina's disappearance, he has never been charged in connection with the case.
