Alexis Dillard, a 22-year-old University of Kansas student, disappeared on December 11, 1992, after a night out with friends at Johnny's Tavern in North Lawrence. Dillard, a senior business major and member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, had been celebrating the end of the fall semester with his fraternity brothers. He was last seen around 12:40 a.m., but he never returned home. His car, a 1989 Acura Integra, was found parked near a bar where he had left it earlier that evening.

There is speculation that Dillard may have drowned in the Kansas River, as a footprint matching his shoe was found near the riverbank. However, the footprint was facing away from the water, and despite extensive searches of the river, including dragging and diving efforts, no trace of Dillard was found. Some witnesses reported seeing him hitchhiking that night, though these sightings were never confirmed. His friends and family maintained that Dillard, known for his intelligence and responsibility, would not have tried to swim the river in the cold conditions of that winter night.

To this day, no solid evidence has emerged about what happened to Dillard, and his case remains unsolved. His disappearance led to the creation of a student leadership award in his name at the University of Kansas, honoring his memory.
