James Donald Kimball was born on December 28, 1968. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as a Caucasian male, 5'7' tall, and weighing 165 pounds, with brown hair and hazel or blue/green eyes. He has distinctive horizontal red marks on his back. When he was last seen, he was wearing a short-sleeved red shirt, black pants, and brown shoes. The sudden death of his father when James was thirteen is believed to have been a significant event in his life, preceding his mental health diagnosis a few years later. Despite periods of hospitalization and recovery, he had graduated from high school and was living with a degree of independence.
