On May 30, 1999, 44-year-old Jerry Dale Calhoun was last seen leaving his residence in Prineville, Oregon. This would be the last time he was seen or heard from by his loved ones. A week later, on June 5, his brother discovered his blue 1990 Subaru station wagon abandoned on U.S. Highway 26 near Mount Hood, approximately thirty miles west of Maupin, Oregon. Inside the vehicle were several personal items, including his cellphone, a gas receipt, full cans of beer, and a propane tank; however, Jerry and his wallet were nowhere to be found. At the time of his disappearance, Jerry was a machinist at his father's shop in Terrebonne and was in the process of purchasing the business. Jerry had a history of disappearing for a few days at a time, particularly when struggling with drug use, but he had never been gone for such an extended period. He was a devoted father who remained active in his daughter's life even after his divorce from her mother. In the months leading up to his disappearance, his family believed he was doing well and had overcome his drug addiction for good. However, his wife mentioned that he would periodically go on a methamphetamine binge and return home filled with remorse for his inability to stay clean. Some family members have expressed concerns that his disappearance might have been a suicide, recalling conversations where he mentioned disappearing if he couldn't conquer his addiction. He had reportedly said, "If I can't get a hold on this thing, one of these days I'm just going to disappear and nobody is going to know how to find me." The investigation into Jerry's disappearance has faced challenges over the years, becoming a cold case for the Crook County Sheriff's Office. Search teams from Wasco and Clackamas counties extensively canvassed the area where his car was found, but their efforts yielded no clues. A few months after he went missing, a collection agent informed his daughter that a credit card had been registered in his name, leading her to believe he might have intentionally started a new life. However, it has not been confirmed if Jerry himself opened this account. The case remains unsolved, leaving his family, including his daughter who has actively investigated his disappearance, searching for answers. The circumstances surrounding Jerry Calhoun's vanishing continue to be a painful mystery, a story of a man battling personal demons whose last known moments are marked by an abandoned car on a lonely highway.
