Tawnya Fay Parker, a 30-year-old woman, was last seen on December 1, 1999, in Redondo Beach, California. Known for leading a transient lifestyle and having a history of substance abuse, Tawnya's disappearance soon became a matter of concern for law enforcement. She had been living with her boyfriend, Thomas Freeman, at the time of her disappearance.

Tawnya was involved in a troubling incident with Freeman just days before she went missing, where she threatened him with a knife during a domestic dispute. Following this altercation, she was hospitalized for evaluation, but no evidence of rape was found despite her claims. After her disappearance, Freeman's actions raised suspicions; he quickly moved out of their shared apartment and disposed of various items, including a mattress that later tested positive for Tawnya's blood.

In November 2003, Freeman was convicted of second-degree murder for Tawnya's death. Although he maintained his innocence and claimed he had not harmed her, the prosecution presented evidence suggesting Tawnya was seriously injured or killed around the time of her disappearance. Despite his conviction, Tawnya's body has never been recovered, leaving her family without closure.
