In the spring of 2008, a 26-year-old woman named Sarah Elizabeth Wilson was last seen on May 8th in Boardman Township, Michigan. Her family grew worried when she failed to arrive at their home in Big Rapids for a planned Mother's Day visit and reported her missing on May 12th. Sarah had been living in Bloomfield Township with a man named David DeJonge, whom she had known for several years and reportedly trusted. DeJonge was supposed to drive her to her parents' house before he continued on to his family's cabin in Kalkaska County. This was the last time she was known to be seen. The investigation into Sarah's disappearance quickly focused on David DeJonge. When questioned, his stories were inconsistent, raising the suspicions of law enforcement. The investigation led police to the DeJonge family cabin in Orange Township, where they discovered what they believed to be Sarah's blood on several items. A crucial piece of evidence came from matching tire tracks found at the cabin to tracks near Mecum Road in Oliver Township. This led to a grim discovery on May 22, 2008, when authorities found Sarah's torso in a swampy area. The remains had been badly mutilated in an apparent attempt to hinder identification. DNA evidence later confirmed the remains belonged to Sarah Wilson, and also confirmed the presence of her blood in and around the cabin. Following the discovery, David DeJonge was charged with an open count of murder and mutilation of a body. Prosecutors theorized that Sarah had been planning to end her association with DeJonge and move back in with her parents, which may have been a motive for the murder. The prosecution's case suggested that DeJonge may have killed her near the cabin, moved her body at least once, and then dismembered her remains to conceal the crime. Though DeJonge was convicted for her murder, parts of Sarah's body were never recovered. The case remains a tragic story of a young woman's life cut short, and while one person was held accountable, the full and final details of her last moments remain unknown.
