On the evening of November 14, 2011, Gary Alan Warner was riding his bicycle in Mansfield, Ohio, when a police officer attempted to stop him. There had been a series of scrap metal thefts in the industrial area behind the former Ohio Brass building where he was seen. In response to the officer's attempt to make contact, Mr. Warner fled on his bicycle. The pursuit was short-lived as he soon abandoned his bicycle and continued to flee on foot into the darkness. The weather that night was poor, with a downpour of rain that made visibility difficult. Tragically, in the dark and rainy conditions, Mr. Warner apparently did not see a steep drop-off into Touby Run, a local creek. The officer who had been pursuing him reported hearing a cry for help but was unable to see or locate Mr. Warner. The creek was significantly swollen and flowing faster than usual due to the recent heavy rains. Immediate search efforts were hampered by the severe weather, which prevented the use of divers or a police helicopter to scan the area for any sign of him. Officers on foot walked the banks of the creek but found no trace of Mr. Warner. At the time of his disappearance, Gary Warner was 56 years old. He is described as a white male with brown hair and hazel eyes, wearing glasses. He has tattoos on both of his arms and a scar on his right hand. On the night he went missing, he was wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt and dark-colored sweatpants. Mr. Warner, who reportedly cannot swim, is presumed to have drowned in the creek that night, but his body has never been recovered. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance began with a routine police stop that escalated into a foot chase with a devastating conclusion. The lack of a recovery has left his case open, a painful uncertainty for those who knew him.
