Ilya Nikolayevich Lomov, a 42-year-old avid outdoorsman from Livermore, California, traveled to the island of Kauai, Hawaii, for a vacation in late December 2012. He arrived on December 24 with plans to enjoy the natural beauty of the island and engage in one of his passions, hiking. He was in communication with his wife, Yuliya Kanarska, and last spoke to her on December 27.
