Ilya Nikolayevich Lomov, a 42-year-old avid outdoorsman from Livermore, California, traveled to the island of Kauai, Hawaii, for a vacation in late December 2012. He arrived on December 24 with plans to enjoy the natural beauty of the island and engage in one of his passions, hiking.
