John William Gates, a 33-year-old man from Longmont, Colorado, disappeared on April 23, 1916. Gates, a teamster who delivered supplies to mining companies, left home that day for an unknown reason and never returned. His wife, concerned for his safety, reported that he had been a good husband and father, with no known reason to abandon his family. In May 1917, she applied for financial assistance under the Mother’s Compensation Act, fearing that her husband had met with an accident.
