Harvey Eugene "Gene" Whitacre, a 20-year-old U.S. Army corporal stationed at Sandia Base, New Mexico, disappeared on the night of June 30, 1947. He was last seen at a bowling alley in Albuquerque, where he served as the treasurer of his bowling league and was carrying $400 in cash. Whitacre was expected to return to Sandia Base the following morning, but he never showed up.
