On the day of her disappearance, Margie and her boyfriend, Willie Lee Battles, went to the First Federal Savings and Loan Office, where she intended to withdraw money for a new car. According to Battles, he fell asleep in the car and awoke to find that Margie was missing and the bank had closed for the day.
However, bank employees later reported that they did not see Margie enter the building, and no activity was recorded on her bank account that day.
Suspicion soon fell on Battles, particularly after witnesses claimed to have seen the couple driving north on U.S. 41 after the supposed bank visit. Despite being questioned multiple times over the years, Battles has never been formally charged due to a lack of concrete evidence. Authorities have long suspected foul play, as it was highly uncharacteristic of Margie to leave her children without any notice. Margie worked diligently as a house cleaner to support her family, further reinforcing doubts that she would abandon them voluntarily.
