James Jurica, a 29-year-old man from Leland, Michigan, went missing on July 30, 1978. He had boarded the Manitou Transit mail boat with plans to attend a family gathering on North Manitou Island. However, the boat only traveled to South Manitou Island that day, where he was dropped off. Over the next few days, campers and residents on South Manitou Island reported seeing him as he tried to find transportation to reach North Manitou. The last confirmed sighting of him was on August 2, 1978.
