Lou Allen Goettsch, a 21-year-old from Abilene, Texas, went missing on March 31, 1981, under suspicious circumstances. On the day of his disappearance, Goettsch was in the process of moving into a new apartment. He had recently received a $3,000 workers' compensation check after an injury sustained while working in the oil fields. That day, he drove his pickup truck to the apartment complex, paid the deposit, and planned to move his belongings, which were left inside the truck.
However, he was never seen again. His truck was later found abandoned at the apartment complex, along with all his possessions, and over $1,000 remained untouched in his bank account.
Goettsch’s disappearance was not reported until two months later, due to his transient lifestyle at the time. Despite his family not initially raising alarm, the situation became more concerning when it was revealed that he had not contacted his girlfriend in Australia, nor accessed his funds. A series of bizarre events unfolded in the following years, including a confession by one of Goettsch's acquaintances, Roney Harper, who claimed to have murdered him in a drug-related altercation. Harper later recanted his confession, and searches failed to locate Goettsch’s remains, leaving investigators without enough evidence to pursue charges.
