Lou Allen Goettsch, a 21-year-old from Abilene, Texas, went missing on March 31, 1981, under suspicious circumstances. On the day of his disappearance, Goettsch was in the process of moving into a new apartment. He had recently received a $3,000 workers' compensation check after an injury sustained while working in the oil fields.
