On April 29, 1981, 84-year-old Reverend Maurice "Doc" Dametz headed out with his friend David McSherry to search for Topaz near the Topaz Point picnic area at Devil's Head in Pike National Forest, Colorado. Topaz is a silicate mineral made of aluminium and fluorine used as a gemstone in jewelery. In its natural state, it is colorless, though trace element impurities can make it pale blue or golden brown to yellow-orange.
