Carla Roberson, a 19-year-old from Montgomery, Alabama, disappeared on May 10, 1984, while visiting family in Pensacola, Florida. On that day, Carla left her aunt's house to spend the afternoon reading and sunbathing at Fort Pickens, a popular beach on the Gulf Islands National Seashore, located on Santa Rosa Island. She promised to return by the early evening, but she never came back.
Her car was found abandoned at the entrance to Fort Pickens, along with her personal belongings, such as her purse, towel, and shoes, which were left on the beach. Footprints were discovered leading toward the water, raising the possibility of a drowning incident. However, authorities could not conclusively determine if she drowned, as neither her body nor her clothing washed up onshore.
At the time of her disappearance, Carla had just finished her sophomore year at Huntingdon College and was working part-time at a doctor's office. She was visiting her aunt and uncle in Florida for a short vacation before returning home for the summer semester. While some investigators believed she might have drowned, there were also concerns about foul play due to the mysterious circumstances and the discovery of her belongings.
