Emmanuel Kalief Birts, an infant just five weeks old, was abducted from his Dallas, Texas home on September 14, 1989. The abduction occurred under suspicious circumstances involving a woman who falsely identified herself as a social worker named "Debra Manning." The woman had visited the family multiple times in the weeks leading up to the kidnapping, claiming that Emmanuel needed medical attention for an eye infection and later suggesting the possibility of an HIV infection, which
was plausible due to concerns about the mother's past drug use.
On the day of the abduction, Emmanuel's mother left him in the care of his grandmother while she went to Parkland Memorial Hospital to inquire about his health. "Debra Manning" arrived at the home, claiming she needed to take Emmanuel for a medical test. Despite promises to return with him by the afternoon, she never came back. Emmanuel has not been seen since.
The abductor is described as an African-American woman in her thirties, approximately 5'6" tall, and 145 pounds. She had sandy brown hair, which may have been a wig, and spoke with a foreign accent. Despite extensive investigations, neither Emmanuel nor the woman has ever been located, and the case remains unsolved.
