William “Billy” Hokanson Jr., 19, and his father, William Hokanson Sr., went missing on March 25, 1990, during a fishing expedition in the Atlantic Ocean. The father and son had set out aboard their boat, the *Sol-e-Mar*, from Fairhaven, Massachusetts, to fish off the coast of Rhode Island. A short distress call, lasting only four seconds, was received from Billy by the U.S. Coast Guard, but the call did not reach anyone in time to initiate an immediate response.
