He was living temporarily in the 100 block of Hudson Street when he planned to hitchhike to Bartow, Florida. However, he never reached his destination and was reported missing by a family member six months later, on February 25, 1995. Martinez had a history of living in Reading, Pennsylvania, and was expected to return there after his stop in Bartow.
At the time of his disappearance, Martinez was known to suffer from epilepsy, which caused seizures.
