In the remote and rugged landscape of False Pass, Alaska, 27-year-old Curtiss Dean Weller vanished on March 23, 2001. Employed as a cod processor, he had just finished his shift and was last seen around 2:30 a.m. visiting a company bunkhouse. According to his coworkers, he was in good spirits at the time. The evening was marked by hazardous weather, as a blizzard was sweeping through the area. Weller, a white male with brown hair and brown eyes, was last seen wearing a purple sweatshirt, brown Carhartts over blue jeans or sweats, and Xtratuf boots marked with his initials, "CW". He also had on a white baseball cap and orange rubber gloves. A scar on his upper right arm was a notable distinguishing feature. An extensive search of the area following his disappearance yielded no clues as to his whereabouts. Weller was reported missing after he failed to show up for his 10:00 a.m. shift at Bering Pacific Seafoods the following day. He was regarded as a model employee and had only recently started the processing job. His mother indicated that he had plans for the future, which included moving to Oregon in June of that year to get married, making his disappearance all the more perplexing. He left without a trace, and what happened in the short distance between the bunkhouse and his room remains a mystery. The Alaska State Troopers have investigated the case, but it remains unsolved. One theory is that Weller may have gone to the waterfront to visit a fishing boat and could have slipped on an ice-covered ladder, falling into the water. However, this has never been proven.
