In the late summer of 2007, the life of Theodore Watson Jr., a 46-year-old man from Charleston County, South Carolina, took a turn that left his family and community with unanswered questions. At the time, he was living with his girlfriend in Hollywood, South Carolina, having been estranged from his wife. A father to an adult daughter, Watson was known to be a kind and loving man who enjoyed DJing for private parties and was an active member of the Edisto Presbyterian Church.
Despite having a heart condition that led to him being on disability from his construction work, he was described as someone who was always smiling and willing to help others. The last confirmed sighting of him was by his girlfriend in the early morning hours of August 29, 2007. After that, he seemingly vanished, and his voice was never heard again by those who knew him.
The mystery deepened in the early hours of August 30, 2007, when a Charleston County sheriff's deputy on patrol discovered Watson's white 1988 Honda Prelude abandoned near the Russell Creek Bridge on S.C. Highway 174. The vehicle's parking lights were on, the windows were partially rolled down, the trunk was open, and the keys were still in the ignition. Inside the unlocked car, investigators found his wallet, two cell phones, and other personal items. A small, but concerning, spot of fresh blood was discovered on the driver's seat. Adding to the perplexing circumstances, another deputy who knew Watson reported seeing what he believed to be Watson's car driving towards Edisto Island just thirteen minutes before it was found abandoned. This sighting placed the vehicle near the McKinley Jr. Washington Bridge.
The discovery of the abandoned car and the troubling signs within it prompted an extensive investigation into Watson's disappearance. Authorities conducted multiple searches, including using divers in the marshes near where the vehicle was found and employing search dogs on four separate occasions, but these efforts yielded no signs of the missing man. Investigators have stated that they believe foul play is involved in his case. They have also indicated that there are individuals who may have information about what happened to Watson but have been unwilling to come forward and cooperate with the investigation. Despite the passage of time, the case remains unsolved, leaving his family, including his daughter and a large extended family, without answers and closure.
