In the autumn of 2014, a young mother named Jael Tiara Hamblen vanished from her home in Anchorage, Alaska, leaving behind a life that, by many accounts, she was trying to turn around. At 20 years old, Jael was last seen on the evening of October 11, 2014, in the Trailside Loop area of South Anchorage. On the day of her disappearance, she and her roommate went out for dinner and returned to their residence before 10:00 p.m. Jael left her infant son in the care of her roommate's mother, who was babysitting both of their children that evening. She was reportedly upset that night after being rejected by a man she was interested in. The last known contact with Jael was a text message she sent to a male friend around 3:00 a.m. on October 12th. After that, her phone appeared to have been turned off or the battery had died, as her roommate's subsequent texts and calls went unanswered. Jael Hamblen was described as a 20-year-old Caucasian female, standing 5'4" tall and weighing between 170 and 185 pounds. She had green eyes and naturally brown hair, which she had recently dyed pink. Distinctive features included pierced ears and a light strawberry birthmark at the base of her skull. When she was last seen, she was wearing a dark wool-like coat, a dark scarf, wide-leg blue jeans, and dark high heels. Jael, who sometimes went by the names Sasha or Tiara, had faced challenges in her life, including a diagnosis of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder which led to developmental delays. Despite a rebellious period in her teens, those close to her said the birth of her son had given her a new sense of purpose, and they do not believe she would have willingly abandoned him. The days following Jael's last known contact were filled with growing concern. Her roommate became worried when Jael didn't respond to texts or calls on October 12th. By midday, a check of her room revealed an unmade bed and no sign of Jael. Her vehicle, a 1998 white Ford Expedition, was still parked at the house, though she only had a driver's permit. Jael's mother officially reported her missing to the Anchorage Police Department on October 14, 2014. A significant break in the case came in March 2015, when hikers discovered Jael's purse buried in the snow along a trail in Chugiak. Inside were her cell phone and social security card. Investigators found it unlikely that Jael, who was not fond of hiking, would have left her purse in that location, especially given the freezing temperatures on the night she disappeared. The discovery of her belongings and the circumstances of her disappearance led the Anchorage Police Department to reclassify her case from a missing person to a possible homicide. To this day, the case remains unsolved, leaving her family, including her son who is being raised by his grandmother, without answers.
