In the coastal town of Toledo, Oregon, a sense of unease settled over the family of Lucille Mae Grenz in the spring of 1962. A 40-year-old woman with distinct red hair and blue eyes, Lucille was last seen at her home on March 30th. She lived with her teenage daughter on Northwest 6th Street. Lucille had recently left her job as a store clerk and was planning a move to Seattle, Washington, to be with her boyfriend. This life change, coupled with a history of having been married eight times and occasionally leaving home without notice, initially led authorities to not take her disappearance with great alarm when they were notified a couple of days after she was last seen. Her daughter, however, grew concerned after a day of no contact and reached out to an aunt in Salem for help. It wasn't until nearly two months later, on May 21st, that the true and disturbing nature of Lucille's absence began to surface. Her daughter, accompanied by a foster mother, went to Lucille's house to collect some clothing. Upon entering the bedroom, they were confronted with a scene that suggested a violent struggle had taken place. The room was in disarray, and conspicuously missing were the mattress, bedclothes, and drapes. Most alarming, however, was the presence of human blood spattered on the walls, floor, and ceiling, a grim indicator of foul play. All of Lucille's personal belongings, including her clothing, were left behind. The investigation pivoted to her boyfriend in Seattle, who was questioned by authorities. He denied any knowledge of her whereabouts or having seen her. A search of his vehicle revealed bloodstains in the trunk, though he could not explain their origin. Despite these suspicious findings, he was never charged in connection with Lucille's disappearance. The case eventually grew cold, leaving a void of unanswered questions for Lucille's family and the community. The official investigation into what happened to Lucille Mae Grenz remains open, a lingering mystery of a woman who vanished from her home, leaving behind only unsettling signs of a violent end.
