On a day in March of 2001, a 20-year-old man named James Michael Robinson embarked on what was intended to be a day of recreation near Bellingham, Washington. He was with a companion, Braden Lindholdt, and the two, both inexperienced in kayaking, borrowed the watercraft to set out from Wildcat Cove in Larrabee State Park. It is believed that neither James nor Braden were wearing life jackets, nor did their kayaks have spray skirts, which are crucial for preventing the cockpit from filling with water in choppy conditions. This decision would prove to have dire consequences as they ventured out into the water, unprepared for the potential dangers of the day's outing. The last time anyone had contact with James was on March 11th of that year. The initial alarm was likely raised when the two men failed to return as expected. A search was presumably launched, and at some point, the kayaks they had used were discovered near the mouth of the Nooksack River. The recovery of the empty kayaks painted a grim picture of what might have transpired. The absence of life jackets and spray skirts would have made them incredibly vulnerable to the cold water and any turbulent conditions they might have encountered. The discovery of the kayaks without any sign of James or Braden shifted the focus of the operation from a rescue to a recovery mission, though hopes of finding them alive would have persisted for a time. James Robinson was described as a white male, standing at 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing approximately 175 pounds. He had short brown hair, blue eyes, and a red goatee at the time of his disappearance. A notable feature was a tattoo of the letter 'S' on his right arm. He was last seen wearing black pants, a white t-shirt, and a blue baseball cap with the number "5" on it. He was also possibly wearing a silver ring and was known to wear a shoe size 11 or 12. His 1982 blue Toyota pickup truck, with Washington license plate 36770X, was also associated with the case. The circumstances surrounding the disappearance of James and his friend Braden Lindholdt strongly suggest a tragic kayaking accident. With the recovery of their kayaks and the lack of any further evidence or contact, both men are presumed to have drowned. The case remains a sorrowful reminder of the unforgiving nature of the water and the importance of proper safety precautions.
